Transformative Potential of AI in Shaping Security Culture

Praxis Security Labs' Kai Roer on How AI Is Affecting the Mindset of Security Teams

Despite its growing buzz, generative AI has yet to alter the dynamics of security culture, said Kai Roer, CEO and founder of Praxis Security Labs. He said that while security professionals are still catching up, organizationwide, employees are engaging with emerging technologies to enhance efficiency, leading to a surge in shadow IT.

This dynamic, Roer said, underscores the imperative for security considerations. As the hype around large language models continues, security professionals must embrace the change, understand its influence on both employees and the organization, and leverage it to build a more resilient and secure environment.

"Organizations that security teams are trying to protect consist of people. People have emotions. They have direction and motivations that you can either try to fight or recruit and leverage. The same is true with AI," Roer said, adding that technologies must be leveraged to make it "easier for the employees to do their job, not harder."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Black Hat Europe 2023, Roer also discussed:

  • How shadow IT poses challenges for security teams;
  • Ethical issues to consider when using artificial intelligence technology;
  • The interplay of geopolitics and security culture within the dynamic threat landscape.

Roer has more than 25 years of experience in the information security field. His mission is to educate and influence the industry, policymakers and other stakeholders on the need for a comprehensive cultural understanding and best practices for improving and measuring security culture.
