So why does everyone keep mislabeling machine learning as artificial intelligence? "I'm so tired of the AI buzzword bingo," Matthews says.
Blame machine learning for not sounding sexy. Or maybe it's because ML has never enjoyed its own Terminator franchise or been linked to the overthrow of human civilization.
But on the upside, machine learning makes it easier for organizations to be better at information security, and especially at the basics. And for defending organizations, arguably getting the basics right continues to matter most of all.
In a video interview at the recent Infosecurity Europe conference, Matthews discusses:
- Machine learning versus artificial intelligence;
- Information security: changing the signal to noise ratio to emphasize what matters most;
- Why information security basics are more important than ever.
Matthews is the CIO at ExtraHop Networks, where he oversees the expansion of the ExtraHop IT environment and counsels the company's enterprise customers as they evolve their IT operations. Before joining ExtraHop, he led IT strategy at F5 Networks, where he was CIO for nearly a decade. Previously, he also served as an IT leader for MSN Operations at Microsoft, CIO for Towne Exploration Co. and director of IT operations at Adobe.
