Smart Cities Challenge: Real-Time Risk Management

Many of the devices that go into so-called smart cities and buildings are not built to be secure, says Sarb Sembhi of Virtually Informed. As a result, managing risk - ideally in real time - can be challenging and leave organizations and individuals at greater risk of cybercrime, he says.

But the problem is not limited to just cities or buildings. "In reality, we're talking about any type of built-up environment, so it could be a stadium; it could be shopping centers; it could be hospitals; it could be government buildings," Sembhi says. "It's where lots of people come together, and the environment they're in is supposed to be a 'smart' environment, according to what a lot of the cities around the world are trying to do."

In a video interview at Information Security Media Group's recent Security Summit: London, Sembhi discusses:

• How to add security assurance to smart building and smart city technology;
• New challenges in a world where everything is IP-enabled;
• Internet of things security efforts, including the U.K. government's code of practice.

He's previously served as a director at NameSTORM Guidance Limited, CTO and acting CISO at Noord-Group and chair of ISACA's Government & Regulatory Advocacy Committee, among other roles.
