Cybersecurity Essentials: How to Maximize Visibility While Minimizing Complexity
Peter Van Lierde, CISO, Sibelga

Criminal hackers don't break for lunches, weekends or holidays. Of course, that's just one of the many challenges facing information security teams as they attempt to maximize visibility and minimize complexity while protecting their business around the clock, says Peter Van Lierde, the CISO of energy firm Sibelga.

Van Lierde says of his cybersecurity strategy: "I try to keep it as simple as possible - simple and short." Visibility into endpoints and network traffic, to know what users are doing as well as what's traversing the network, is one of his essentials. "All of that can help to get to the basics of security, which is risk management," he says. "But you need that visibility to be able to take the right decisions on a risk level, as well. So that that's very important, and that's my biggest challenge: getting that visibility."

In an interview with Information Security Media Group as part of the ongoing CyberEdBoard Profiles in Leadership series, Van Lierde discusses:

  • Essential strategies for every CISO;
  • Top challenges, including maintaining visibility into end user activities and what's traveling across the network;
  • Techniques for improving the enterprise security posture.

Van Lierde is the CISO of Begium-based Sibelga. He began his career in the military, having studied at the Royal Military Academy as a civil engineer in telecommunications and worked in a variety of hardware- and software-based IT roles. Later, he moved into information security and has specialized in that for the past decade, including as a consultant, with experience across numerous industries, including utilities, staffing, banking, manufacturing and retail.
