ITRC: Identity Crime Predictions for 2022

ITRC's Eva Velasquez on the Emergence of a 'New Chain of Victimization'
Eva Velasquez, president and CEO, Identity Theft Resource Center

Eva Velasquez, CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, shares six predictions for 2022 that show a shift from identity theft to identity fraud as cybercriminals continue to refine who they target, what information they steal and what they do with it.

Velasquez says "re-victimization rates are going to continue to increase" and a new "chain of victimization will emerge." Social media account takeover in particular, she says, is a case in which a single incident with one victim can lead to a chain of individuals being victimized.

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, Velasquez discusses:

  • The ITRC’s predictions for identity crimes in 2022;
  • What organizations and consumers can do differently to protect against these crimes;
  • Priorities for the ITRC in 2022.

Velasquez is the president and CEO at the Identity Theft Resource Center. She previously served as the vice president of operations for the San Diego Better Business Bureau and spent 21 years at the San Diego District Attorney’s Office. She is a recipient of the National Crime Victim Service Award from the U.S. Department of Justice and the Office for Victims of Crime and the Florence Kelley Consumer Leadership Award from the National Consumers League.
