Facing the Complexity of Unified Identity, Third-Party Risk

SailPoint CEO Mark McClain Discusses Identity Security Challenges
Mark McClain, founder and CEO, SailPoint

In the identity security market, mid- to large-scale enterprises often grapple with understanding who has access to what within their IT environments. Mark McClain, CEO of SailPoint, said that traditional perimeter-based security has expanded, so security teams need to understand access in a world of mobile and cloud computing.

While many vendors focus on merging different aspects of identity management, SailPoint's approach is to provide a "comprehensive unified platform that understands all identities and all data in the organization," he said.

"The most notable thing we're seeing -and we're certainly hearing this from so many of our customers - is: They are still wrestling deeply with the threats against their own employees and the identities that they think they know well - the people that work for them, that get paid by them, that have an employee ID," McClain said. "What they are all doing, though, is exposing that technology all the time, with good reason, to business partners, contractors and supply chains. Today's technology infrastructure in an organization is no longer focused on just serving those employees."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2024, McClain also discussed:

  • The difference between converged identity and unified identity;
  • The significance of regulatory governance in critical sectors such as healthcare;
  • Emerging threats associated with nonemployee and nonhuman identities.

McClain directs the overall vision and strategy of SailPoint. He has almost 35 years of experience in technology and more than 20 years of experience as a founder and leader of innovative identity management companies. He co-founded Waveset Technologies and has diverse experience in international sales and marketing.
