The increasing volume, frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks has made cyber resiliency a top priority for security leaders. But there are certain roadblocks to overcome before an organization can be cyber resilient, advise Samir Mishra and Navin Mehra of Cisco.

Cyber resilience helps an organization withstand threats and unpredictable changes - and emerge stronger.

"Resiliency is not whether the breach will happen - it is about when the breach will happen. It is about an organization's state of preparedness to detect and remediate those attacks," says Mishra, director of security business at Cisco India.

Mishra adds that the biggest roadblock to cyber resilience is the shortage of skilled manpower. "The other reason is executive support or buy-in. The third reason is the complex IT infrastructure. It has to be simple and intuitive for the user," he says.

With IT infrastructure moving out of the central data center, networks have become borderless. The threat surface has expanded as users work from anywhere, hence the need to integrate networking and security.

"When your network has a lot of edges, in the form of BYOD, or has moved to the cloud or third-party infrastructure, you want to ensure that your security goes hand in hand with the network," says Mehra, regional leader of cybersecurity at Cisco India and the SAARC region. "So network integration with security is a key aspect of cyber resilience."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at ISMG's Dynamic CISO Excellence Awards and Conference, Mishra and Mehra discuss:

  • Roadblocks to cyber resilience;
  • Strategies to enable cyber resilience in the enterprise;
  • How Cisco is helping organizations improve cyber resilience.

Mishra has over two decades of industry experience across sales, business development, strategy, operations and channels. He previously served at elite organizations including Tata Telecom, Avaya and Zscaler.

Mehra has been a cybersecurity practitioner for over two decades and is a certified information systems security professional. He previously served as regional director of Fortinet. His career goal is to evangelize organizations toward a resilient cybersecurity posture.
