Digital Growth Outpaces Security: A Growing Crisis

Cybersecurity Expert Kanishk Gaur on Growing Security Implementation Gaps
Kanishk Gaur, cybersecurity expert and threat intelligence researcher

India's rapid digital transformation over the past three years has significantly expanded its attack surface, creating vulnerabilities that organized hacking groups are actively exploiting. This digital expansion, while driving innovation and accessibility, has exposed critical gaps in security implementation across various sectors, such as finance, aviation and healthcare.

As the country’s digital infrastructure expands, gaps in "security by design" and privacy measures have left industries vulnerable to data breaches, ransomware and phishing attacks from local and transnational cybercriminals.

"Today the aviation sector is under tremendous stress because of large digital infrastructure, and they have not worked at security proactively," said Kanishk Gaur, cybersecurity expert and threat intelligence researcher. "All they have now done is set up security operation centers, but they don't do threat intelligence or threat hunting exercises."

The healthcare sector faces similar challenges. "Very few hospitals have proactively invested in security, whereas they have been digitized. They have started using artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics. But security was never paramount," Gaur said. He advised organizations to prioritize security exercises, including red teaming, blue teaming, purple teaming and proactive disaster recovery simulations, to strengthen their cyber defense capabilities.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at the GovWare Conference and Exhibition 2024, Gaur also discussed:

  • The importance of cyber insurance in risk management;
  • Critical vulnerabilities in aviation sector's digital infrastructure;
  • The need for comprehensive healthcare risk management frameworks.

Gaur is a cybersecurity, public policy and digital technology expert specializing in data protection, privacy, policy regulation, safety, international trade, defense and security, digital consulting, and digital laws. Previously, he has held senior leadership roles at Deloitte, EY and Synopsis Inc.
