4 Tips to Improve Mobile SecurityExpert Advice for Minimizing Privacy Threats
The explosive growth in the use of mobile devices in healthcare brings with it significant risk, such as loss or theft of devices containing sensitive patient information. That's why using technology and administrative/physical controls to get robust security in place ahead of time is crucial, says David Houlding, healthcare security and privacy lead architect at Intel.

Houlding spoke along with Greg Davidson, Panasonic's senior business development manager for healthcare, at an educational session Feb. 22 at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Conference in Las Vegas.
Davidson offers four mobile security tips:
- Assess usage. Conduct a risk analysis and determine what data staff members are accessing via mobile devices and why.
- Offer security training. Teach workers best practices, such as not giving out passwords or neglecting to implement encryption on their devices. "If you're relying on purely a tech solution to solve security, you're making a mistake," Davidson says.
- Implement role-based user controls. Ensure that staff members use mobile devices only to access information essential to their jobs.
- Encrypt data. Encryption of any patient information stored on mobile devices, as well as data in transit, are essential steps.
